April 5 -- What Happened to My File?
Sometimes I feel like an idiot because I saved a file but I didn't note just where the application put it. Now I want it but where to look? Two tools that help greatly are "Start|Documents" (useful only if it was saved very recently) and "Start|Find|Files or Folders". I'll cover some of the ways these tools can be used very effectively.
For more serious cataloging there are several applications that work quite well. I have burned over 300 CDs of images and files and it's really nice to be able to go immediately to the right one to get the desired file. I'll show off Advanced Disk Catalog (for files) and Jasc Media Center (for images), as well as some ancillary applications I have found very useful. One example is BeyondCompare, which can compare individual files and highlight the differences. It can also compare every file in a directory tree, which is very useful for making sure that CD you made is readable on another drive and has everything just right.

The Goleta DeskTop Publishing Users Group is a SIG (Special Interest Group) of the Santa Barbara PC Users Group. We are not platform specific: some members have PCs, some have Macs, some have both. Linux and other systems are sprinkled in as well for good measure. We focus on the issues of publishing in all forms, be it on paper, web, CD-ROM, or some other medium.
