December 6 -- Printing, Marketing, and Fulfillment
by Bill Frank of One 2 One Direct
Many authors quickly realize that writing a book is the "easy part." After the manuscript is complete comes the three hardest parts for any author turned publisher: printing, marketing and distributing the book. The book needs to be printed, which means the page size and type of binding need to be selected. The cover art needs to be created as well.
You should register the copyright, and if the book is going to be sold it needs an ISBN number and a Library of Congress number. Also, somebody needs to handle the process of shipping books as they are ordered.
Authors of short-run books (100 to 3000 copies) have better choices now than they did in the past, because now some printers go directly from computer files to print, completely revolutionizing the publishing industry. No longer is it necessary to be a prisoner of traditional printing which required printing thousands or tens of thousands of books to amortize set-up costs to get a reasonable per-copy price.
Bill will talk about the services of One 2 One Direct, which focuses on solving authors' printing and distribution needs. One 2 One Direct specializes in short-run books, both perfect- and hard-bound. They also handle order fulfillment.
Come and learn how you can publish anything from a family history for your 100 closest relatives, to general-interest books which will be sold everywhere, with reasonable up-front costs and superior quality.
Please send email to gdtpug@troutcom.com with suggestions for topics you are interested in seeing covered. Or even better, volunteer to give a presentation!
The Goleta DeskTop Publishing Users Group is a SIG (Special Interest Group) of the Santa Barbara PC Users Group. We are not platform specific: some members have PCs, some have Macs, some have both. Linux and other systems are sprinkled in as well for good measure. We focus on the issues of publishing in all forms, be it on paper, web, CD-ROM, or some other medium.
