March 11 -- Creating a Web Site
You've looked at lots of web sites while browsing the Web, and maybe
thought it was about time you made one of your own. Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers)
give you 5 or 10MB of space for your stuff, but the question is, how
do you do it?
This meeting will give you a quick introduction to web site creation. We'll
start with an overview of what a site consists of, and then actually create
one during the meeting.
We'll show many of the more important basics, including:
- How to lay out a site that is easy to update
- How to link from one page to the next
- How to include pictures and animations
- How to control placement of text and pictures
- How to choose "web-safe" colors
- How to link to a specific place within a page
- How to include "alt" text, which displays until images are loaded,
and why it's important to use alt text
- How to test your design before unveiling it and letting everyone see your mistakes
- Some of the issues involved in creating a site that works for most versions of most browsers
I hope you bring questions so we cover the topics you are interested in.
Remember, the meetings are free and open to the public. Please bring a friend.
