GDTPUG Meeting Thursday July 8, 1999
July 8 -- Electronic Documents
presented by Dana Trout
The dust has mostly settled in the electronic document wars, with the winners being primarily HTML and Adobe Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format). Recently I have had to do a fair amount of publishing of significant-sized documents (300 pages or more) in both formats. Each has unique advantages as well as drawbacks, so you have to look at the purpose and use of the document to decide which is the most appropriate form.
The presentation will start with a brief review of HTML's and Acrobat's strengths and weaknesses, then we will look at publishing from PageMaker in either format, and what is needed to make the resulting document acceptable and useful. As is so often the case, just because an item appears on a program's feature list, that doesn't mean that it is usable.
Book Raffle
Everyone attending the meeting will have a chance to win a free book. I'm bringing 8 different DTP or web-related titles, so the odds of winning one are pretty good. Remember, you can't win if you don't come!
This time I promise to remember to raffle them off properly at a reasonable time, and if I forget I hope one of you will remind me!
Remember, the meetings are free and open to the public. Please bring a friend.
